Cheltenham Festival Trials Day: Paisley Park and Santini among runners
With months to go before the beginning of jump racing’s Cheltenham Festival, the last Saturday in January offers some excellent opportunities for a warm-up.
Here are a few horses to look out for in races in Doncaster and Cheltenham.
Cheltenham, triumph Hurdle Trial
12:40 GMT: Rowland Ward
Shrewd punters enjoy supporting a horse using ability that hasn’t necessarily receive the credit it deserves when the cause of this is that they aren’t educated or ridden by’household names’.
And there is an opportunity that Rowland Ward, educated by Stuart Edmunds and being ridden by jockey Ciaran Gethings, falls into this category – like Edmunds’ Wolf Of Windlesham, which I remember developing a shock in another race.
Rowland Ward, who is the second favorite behind Monte Cristo in the Triumph Hurdle Trial, was a well-touted’speaking horse’ when creating his hurdle-race introduction at Warwick in December only to collapse when creating a potentially decisive move, but then he made no mistake when successful in a fantastic quality race at Kempton.
Cheltenham, cotswold Chase
Santini, a Grade One-race winner over hurdles, has the appearance of being one of the very upwardly mobile chasers around as he attempts to enhance his prospects further for the Cheltenham Gold Cup, where he is rated a hope that is British-trained that is primary.
Place in the RSA Chase in the 2019 Cheltenham Festival was particularly creditable since the eight-year-old was subject. Finally, the Topofthegame only beat him.
The challenge posed with the unique shapes of Cheltenham seems to match – type figures in the 132: track – plus he’s rightly a fancy to watch off Bristol De Mai and business on this event.
Novices’ Hurdle, Cheltenham
When powerful after some near-misses over the same two-and-a-half mile space in Cheltenham on New Year’s Day Even the ex-French Protektorat, coached by Dan Skelton for a set of owners that includes Sir Alex Ferguson, eventually fulfilled his early promise.
To practically everyone’s surprise that day, the horse, ridden as here from the coach’s jockey brother Harry, was disqualified from first position from the stewards for causing hindrance a conclusion that has been reversed on appeal.
Protektorat may follow up en route into the Festival and gets the ribbon though King Roland a rather straightforward winner also at Exeter, however on 1 January, is likely to be a difficult nut to crack.
Wonderful Yorkshire Chase, Doncaster
With champion jump jockey Richard Johnson breaking his right arm, and almost certainly losing the grip to the title that he’s had for the last four seasons, so his chief rival Brian Hughes appears set to get his first championship, provided he steers clear of harm.
While Hughes is known for quantity of winners rather than big-race victories, this three-mile prize may easily watch him take a prestige trophy on board Chidswell, trained by in-form Nicky Richards.
It is a competitive affair, however Chidswell has been well backed at the build-up as fans think about if the 11-year-old finished second at Kelso at December together with the acceptable weight he’s been jobless, the guarantee demonstrated.
Cheltenham, cleeve Hurdle
15:35: Paisley Park
Many of jump racing’s exceptional long-distance hurdlers have utilized this three-mile decoration to display their well-being prior to the Cheltenham Festival – Inglis Drever and Big Buck’s spring easily to mind – and – also Paisley Park, the division’s present undisputed star, seems to do exactly the same.
The Emma, owned by Andrew Gemmell and staged as standard by Aidan Coleman, is claiming the same type of dominance, also was successful in the Stayers Hurdle of the 2019 Festival.
He’s placed a past which is, and comprised life-threatening illness as a child . The Lavelle team also conducts the promising De Rasher Counter, part-owned from Gemmell, at the Cotswold Chase.
