Chris Smalling hopes for England recall for Euro 2020
Roma defender Chris Smalling expects he will make England’s Euro 2020 squad despite not playing Gareth Southgate’s staff since 2017.
The 30-year-old, on loan from Manchester United, states since moving into Serie A. he’s become a better player
The stated his household indicated he wants to remain in Italy following season and feels settled at Rome.
“Obviously it’s been a couple of years now, but that fantasy is always there with England,” he told Sport.
“I know Gareth and the training staff have been to a few of my games over here and I guess you know you’re in their mind if you’re playing in a top club.
“I maintain those aspirations, and I just try to focus on here and everything comes. But I would very much want to become a part of [the [ Euros], for sure.”
Smalling, that has 31 England caps, would face competition to make Euro 2020 out of Manchester United’s Harry Maguire, Liverpool’s Joe Gomez, Aston Villa’s Tyrone Mings, Manchester City’s John Stones, Everton’s Michael Keane along with Chelsea’s Fikayo Tomori.
However, Tomori and Stones haven’t been playing regularly for their own clubs and Smalling says he has learnt about the craft of defending since linking Roma in August.
“I feel like I am picking up a great deal on Italian design, and strategies and how to handle games. I’m certainly adding to my game,” he added. “I really feel like I’m improving and learning.”
England’s next game is really a friendly against Italy March.
Smalling is currently on a loan at the group, that are fifth in Serie A, and has been linked at the end of the season.
But asked if he wished to extend his stay at Roma, Smalling stated:”Yeah, I think that the plan at the beginning of the season was supposed to contribute as far as I can then hopefully if we’ve all had a fantastic season and hit our aspirations then those talks can occur.
“I have been more than happy with my very first half of the season, it is now just making certain that we kick and complete the season strongly because we’ve got a whole lot to play for.
“Coming around here and attempting to hit ground running with football was the priority. However, the language being learnt by me and my family settling in and appreciating the culture, it is something you need to take advantage of.
“My family and I certainly are.”
