As fellow American Sofia Kenin fought to win in the Australian Open fourth round teenage phenomenon Coco Gauff missed out to her first Grand Slam quarter-final.
Gauff, 15, lost 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 6-0 into the 14th seed in Melbourne.
As Kenin wore down her she revealed all her undoubted quality in the group, but tired in the next.
Kenin will confront either Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur or the Wang Qiang at the last eight of China.
Following a warm embrace at the net, both gamers jumped out in tears after an intense battle on Melbourne Arena.
Kenin, 21, fell her racquet and cupped her face with both hands.
An Gauff received a standing ovation as she walked off the court, understandably disappointed however with much better moments’ chance before her.
“I was just fighting,” Kenin stated. “She also performed some great points at critical moments but I simply had to unwind and unwind”
