Dan Evans claimed his fourth victory over a participant this season by coming from a set down from Fabio Fognini at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.
The British No 1 procured a 3-6 6-4 7-5 victory after two hours and 39 minutes and trailed in each of 3 places but refused to let 11th-ranked Fognini pull off.
Evans found himself 4-0 down in the opening set and struggled to get on the front foot from among the game’s many gifted ball-strikers.
He recovered with Fognini enjoying a bad game a single break to get himself and then rushed back from 3-1 to choose the place.
The Italian’s intensity fluctuated and Evans maintained carrying his sixth match point in the game recovering from a break down in the deciding set and fighting.
“It is fantastic to have through the tight ones, particularly against someone as good as Fabio,” Evans informed Amazon Prime.
The 29-year-old will face Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert at the second round.
Benoit Paire snapped his five-match losing streak from Marin Cilic with a 2-6 7-5 7-6 (7-1) win.
The eighth seed saved match points into some, which he dominated to set a contest against fellow countryman Richard Gasquet up to get a spot from the quarter-finals.
