As Vasek Pospisil and Denis Shapovalov united to conquer Australia and become the initial semi-finalists of this Davis Cup the increase of tennis continued.
Canada have been enjoying as a two-man team due to injury but Pospisil in particular has been inspired and he defeated John Millman 7-6 (9-7) 6-4 in the opening singles rubber.
Mystery surrounded the absence of Nick Kyrgios, who’d played at the opening two matches but supported this time.
Captain Lleyton Hewitt later clarified:”He has injured . We did have a choice. He couldn’t play. So Johnny needed to measure up to the plate. He had a collarbone injury”
Alex De Minaur maintained Australia in contention having a 3-6 victory over Shapovalov from the battle of the young guns before a disappointingly small but enthusiastic crowd.
However, the Australians were unable to complete the comeback, even with Pospisil, who is rated a lowly 150 and Jordan Thompson and Shapovalov beating John Peers 6-4 6-4 to set up a battle with Serbia or Russia on Saturday.
Serbia eased on Thursday, following up triumph over Japan using a 2-1 success against France that eliminated the seeds.
“This is the most ideal situation for people,” said Novak Djokovic. “Winning both twists after singles rather than being pressured from the doubles.
“So we are coming to the quarters now and playing against Russia tomorrow. That’s unquestionably one of the best quality teams . It is likely to be a large challenge.”
Russia were among both best-placed.
Spain will be without their number two singles player, Roberto Bautista Agut, who abandoned the contest following his father was taken seriously sick, to go. The Spanish federation afterwards announced that the father of Bautista Agut had sadly died.
Last year the 31-year-old, that lost his mother, had been due to get married next weekend.
