Alec Stewart is confident England will probably salvage a draw.
The negative of joe Root face an uphill job at Bay Oval after final day on 55-3 – albeit this one of the wickets will be nightwatchman Jack Leach – to track the Dark Caps by 207 runs.
Joe Denly (7no) will be joined at the crease from skipper Root in the morning, together with Ben Stokes, Ollie Pope and Jos Buttler still to emerge.
Former England captain Stewart advised The Cricket Debate:”I am stating that England are going to draw this Test match. It’s going to be tough but I have belief in Denly, Root, Stokes along with the remainder.

“It’s whether can bat 90 overs and save the match and there is not any reason why they can not, with great character, decent program and great decision making in the photos.
New Zealand spinner Mitchell Santner followed his maiden Test century with all the wickets of Rory Burns (31), Dom Sibley (12) and Leach (0) – the latter walking away after being given out caught at short leg after a review could have saved him.
“It’ll be really disappointing if England lose this Evaluation,” said Surrey manager of cricket Stewart. “Santner should not really hurt you if you have a good game plan.”
New Zealand racked 615-19 up declared – BJ Watling amassing 205 and Santner 126 – as England surrendered 600 runs or longer from your home 24 Tests for the first time in their last.
Stewart states county pitches that are English aren’t adequately preparing bowlers for tours.
“The [Kookaburra] ball is still really a gigantic factor but it’s also pitches that we play on in England, pitches our bowlers develop on in team cricket and county cricket,” he added.
“You can almost cheat because a bowler in England on a number of these surfaces we all perform and the days we play these games.
“We play in seamer-friendly conditions and you do not need to be that accurate or fast as you know the ball is going to do plenty.
“Darren Stevens is one of the main wicket-takers in county cricket, but with the greatest regard to Darren, in case you place him on that pitch at New Zealand he will probably be nowhere near as effective. That’s our problem.”
