The Belgium deal expires and he’ll be free to speak to clubs in January.
Vertonghen, who was of interest in Roma and Bayer Leverkusen, was open to discussions over an extension under previous supervisor Mauricio Pochettino – also he had been told he was not available in the summer.
But Sky Sports News understands that formal talks have to take place between chairman Daniel Levy and the representatives of Vertonghen.
