Jon Rahm fires career-best 61, including hole-in-one, at WGC-Mexico Championship
As a career-best 61, for example a hole-in-one, propelled him to contention at the WGC-Mexico Championship jon Rahm was happy to take advantage of a great fortune.
Rahm birdied six of the first seven holes before a bogey at eight Gee his struggle and enjoyed a red-hot beginning to his round, but he revived his own charge up the leaderboard with three back-nine birdies ahead of his moment around the 17th.
The Spaniard’s arrow-straight gap leash in the 158-yard par-three landed a couple of feet short of the hole and jumped straight into the cup to the next bounce for the next ace of the afternoon, after Chez Reavie’s fifth hole-in-one about the PGA Tour at the third only over an hour before.
“With the start I had now, the only thing in mind was attempting to get as close as possible about the leaders,” said Rahm, whose 11-under round raised him into the top five on 15 under par.
“When I had a good ending, I was going to have a chance tomorrowand that is sort of what gave me a second wind on the back nine.
“After four times, I had tap-in, tap-in, tap-in and 10 feet for birdie, and that I believed it could be a very special day, and then backing it up with a terrific birdie on seven and six and a terrific tee shot . I had a bit of a hiccup , a three-putt about the eighth, and it’s only a hole that is tricky, but that which ends up.
“I think a whole good deal of us prefer to talk occasionally about how unlucky folks get, and I think that was one of the times where I got lucky.
“I hit the perfect shots and I got the right bounces, and I use it. I am just happy that, after the initial two weeks I’m likely to have a opportunity on Sunday without having to shoot at 59 or something like that.
“I just need to remain focused on things I have to do, realizing that I am not likely to get as fortunate as I did now, and perhaps understand that I’m not likely to make every putt I look at.
“Just keep confident that I’m under charge of my golf swing and keep hitting the appropriate shots and hopefully get a nice start and give the leaders something to think about.”
