Jose Mourinho: Tottenham’s new manager has five early issues to deal with
Deciding that to continue side and who to play with, who to phase out – some of the key questions to answer at Tottenham of Jose Mourinho.
Sport looks at the things he’ll have in his mind prior to his first match as Spurs boss, a visit to West Ham on Saturday (12:30 GMT).
Mourinho might have to determine what to do with Christian Eriksen. Even the 27-year-old Denmark attacking midfielder was one of Spurs’ greatest players across his 291 games for the club but he’s out of contract next summer and widely anticipated to leave.
Eriksen has started eight from Spurs’ 17 games this season, establishing one and scoring just two goals. Compare that to last season, when he began in 30 Premier League games – with an injury keeping him for a few of the eight matches from the starting XI.
The new Spurs manager has not found somewhere in his XI for playmakers – for example Kaka in Real Madrid or even Juan Mata at Chelsea. On a system that does not require him, will the new boss settle with maybe not likely to participate with Mourinho long duration?
Or will he build his Spurs team about Eriksen and expect to convince him to sign a new contract?
He’ll also need to decide whether he wants to try to keep Belgium defenders Toby Alderweireld or Jan Vertonghen at the club, along with all the deals dying in July.
One of Mourinho challenges may be keeping captain Harry Kane aboard. The England striker turned into a Spurs regular, and subsequently a goalscorer.
Following the director’s sacking, he tweeted:”Gaffer. For helping me reach my dreams I’ll be thankful to you. We’ve had some moments that I won’t ever forget. You were my boss but my friend and I thank you. Very good luck with another chapter”
Some 89 percent of Kane’s career aims at club level have come under the Argentine (169 out of 190).
Kane will wish to win trophies throughout his profession – he hasn’t won – therefore his friend could be grown with by that the temptation to leave no more in charge of the club. So Mourinho needs to turn to the charm in a series of guy management – or assist Kane to win some silverware.
Kane may find himself needing to trace Pochettino if he fails to do .
A new supervisor often has ideas that are entirely different to the prior boss – so could a few suddenly find themselves back into the group?
Holding midfielder Eric Dier may find himself in favor.
Actually Pochettino believed when he had a friendly conversation in Portuguese with Mourinho after a game in 29, Dier, who had been raised in Portugal, was disrespectful.
Dier has played Premier League games for Spurs this season, including Pochettino match against Sheffield United – if he had been played out of position. Another midfielder, Victor Wanyama, that has handled this year to just 113 minutes, may have hopes of finding favour.
So too might Brazil Lucas Moura, the Champions League hero against Ajax last year, who has started four league games this season – with two.
Mourinho is not scared to make choices – sometimes. Some make sense in hindsightothers maybe not so much.
To get a league match against Malaga at December 2012, Mourinho dropped Real Madrid’s legendary goalkeeper Iker Casillas, who played the Antonio Adan that was comparatively monolithic, and had been only 31 at that time.
Adan also began the next game – but had been shipped off, therefore his place was won by Casillas . A month Casillas fractured his hands and if he had recovered that he could not win his place back from signing Diego Lopez, a keeper.
At Manchester United he picked midfielder Scott McTominay, who had played 204 minutes at the Premier League all season, above #89m registering Paul Pogba for a Champions League knockout game against Sevilla at February 2018.
At United that was one of his better choices in hindsight, with the one of the players. Having said that, it is best to not mention him picking McTominay in the subsequent time in a 3-1 defeat at West Ham.
So what surprise decisions could he make in Spurs? Michel Vorm as number one? Drop Harry Kane and play adolescent Troy Parrott instead? Harry Winks in the Center of defence? We may find out about Saturday.
Pochettino was adored at Tottenham, therefore Mourinho is going to need a fast start to get fans on his side. In the least they may expect to move the table up from place, although they will want attacking soccer.
He hasn’t dropped his opening match at any club because his game as a manager, when Benfica dropped to Boavista.
Since that time he’s won his opening match with Porto, Chelsea – twice – and Manchester United, and attracted at the beginning of his time with all Uniao de Leiria, Inter Milan (although they won on penalties) and Real Madrid.
Nonetheless, this is actually the first time since taking over Porto in January 2002 that he has joined a club.
