Mark Cavendish ‘not guaranteed’ Tour de France spot
Mark Cavendish isn’t certain of a place in the 2020 Tour de France along with his new team Bahrain McLaren, states their manager Rod Ellingworth.
Group Dimension Data not, picked for the 2019 race 34, cavendish, but wishes to grow his 30 stage wins to capture Eddy Merckx’s record 34.
“nobody is guaranteed for the Tour – he knows it’ll be a hard challenge,” said Ellingworth.
However he added:”If he’s winning World Tour level, why would not we choose him?”
Ellingworth continued:”it is a particular sort of Tour this season, and I am not shying away from stating that it is an excellent Tour de France to get [new signing] Mikel Landa.
“For Mark, whether he’s performing and winning nicely, why do we never think about going on this journey and trying to be the best phase winner in Tour de France history”
Cavendish, that has not yet been contained at the Great Britain team to the Track Cycling World Championships, has been diagnosed using the virus in 2017 and has fought for fitness ever since then.
But Ellingworth says he’s happy with the Manxman’s fitness and last week Cavendish, that took part from the third-tier Saudi Tour, may compete in his very first World Tour race of this year at the UAE Tour, which begins on 23 February.
“With regards to the health, we’ve now ticked this box,” Ellingworth additional. “He’d fought off and on. That is what that virus does, it limits you, you can not go deep, so you can’t back up day after day.
“But he’s been training well for four months so that is good. Then you have the race which hasn’t been around for a little while, but we have ticked that box now.”
