Michael van Gerwen fears nobody as he eyes fourth World Championship
Michael van Gerwen will begin the defence of the World Championship title on the tournament’s opening night on December 13 since he eyes a Alexandra Palace victory and the irrepressible Dutchman is relishing the challenge.
‘The Green Machine’ raised his next World Championship crown courtesy of a 7-3 win against Michael Smith in the showpiece of last year and the world is currently expecting to keep a domain for the very first time.
MVG was faced – . But he did defend his name back in October and he is hoping to replicate the feat from the funds.
“I’m in my keeping period,” quipped Van Gerwen, talking at media day ahead of next month’s World Championship.
“I don’t see why I can’t do it . I’m awaiting it and folks need to do something very special if they want to quit me.
“I don’t see the difference when I’ve won it once, twice or three times. I go there the will.
“You always feel tension but I had that five, six, seven, eight decades ago. That is great – it makes you more powerful for the following games and you always need to keep in mind don’t get too relaxed since mistakes will be made.”
The three-time world champion has enjoyed near perfect preparation for its pilgrimage scooping four of their six major events.
He edged out Gerwyn Price in a contest that was thrilling to assert that a Players Championship Finals title on Sunday evening – that his individual televised victory over the PDC.
Price conquered the Dutchman for the first time in 20 tries to keep his Grand Slam crown a week earlier Van Gerwen was thrilled to strike back using a blow before the one that was major.
“I have a big target on my back and when you are doing very well people do not need you to win. I understand that – .
“Then you get the wonderful struggles on the point and I believe that’s excellent for darts, especially characters such as Gerwyn Price because he’s doing very well lately, but I’m glad I can put the strain on him yesterday and beat him at a really important closing.
“If I’m in my best it is impossible for them to beat me but you can say whatever you want, then you have to reveal it on the stage.
“You are not allowed to make mistakes because these are guys that exercise every day and I have a big target on my back – they always offer just a tiny bit farther against me against anyone else,” he further added.
It has been a different trophy-laden effort for its 30-year-old, though it’s been serene progress during the year, as he suffered a sudden blip in shape during the summertime.
Van Gerwen endured disappointment in the World Cup and World Matchplay and unexpectedly went 15 matches without posting a ton-plus ordinary, which prompted a few questions about if his dominance was starting to diminish.
Nevertheless,’Mighty Mike’ has virtually any lingering doubters something he has taken pleasure from, in emphatic manner.
“I adore this [proving people wrong]. You want to make sure that you keep getting in the top of them.
“People threw everything in my year since I showed some weakness at the summer – I didn’t play 100 percent my game however, the bounce back feels even better.
“Of course I do not fear anyone. In the event you dread anyone you are 1-0 supporting and you should not place yourself. You have to concentrate on your own strengths and not your weaknesses.
“Yes they fear me, that’s 1 thing for certain but I do not need mind-games. I want to let my darts speak and I need to be sure that I do the proper things in the proper moments.”
This season’s tournament also marks the conclusion of Raymond van Barneveld’s famous career – as the flag-bearer for darts bows out after 35 years at the very top level.
The pair have contested some exhilarating battles on the Alexandra Palace point but despite his battles in 2019, MVG believes his compatriot might be a threat in this season’s occasion.
“Of course Gary Anderson [is a danger ] because he has never had the best season but he will measure up like he always does,” Van Gerwen added.
“Raymond generally works well here. Rob Cross, Gerwyn Price and darts are enjoying. There are many players currently playing well who could travel far in the championship but are they really capable of winning the championship? I don’t know.”
The developing rivalry with Cost of the Dutchman has caught the imagination of the public ahead of the championship – particularly having broken his duck.
‘The Iceman’ has increased to a career high of third having attained three finals Cross is second seed, having clinched two TV names this 39, although 2018 champion.
Van Gerwen and Cross contested one of the World Championship games in the back in 2018 and the world No 1 insists rivalries are critical for the game.
“It is very important because in case you don’t have conflicts like that folks may see it as boring. Nowadays you find one goes off and Gerwyn Price steps upward. Rob Cross had a couple of peaks at the World Matchplay and the Championship, so it has been great this season.
“It is definitely going to be tough because they are playing fantastic darts against mepersonally. I know what I have to do to win the tournament but you need to perform it
“It’s definitely going to be great fun this season because there’s a great deal of players playing excellent darts and it’s good for the folks at home to watch cracking darts and high normal matches.”
