Premier League stats: Why Leicester are title challengers again
We need to talk about Leicester.
Much of the recent media focus has been on the chaos at Tottenham the conflict between Liverpool and Manchester City and also the developing crises at Everton, Arsenal and West Ham.
Away from all that sound though, Brendan Rodgers’ unwanted have continued to go about their business quietly (barring one headline-grabbing result), reluctantly and quite superbly – with Saturday’s 2-0 win at Brighton maintaining them second in the desk, a stage above the reigning champions and supporting only Jurgen Klopp’s unbeaten leaders.
You do not need us to remind you what happened the previous time Leicester were as.
And while we wouldn’t suggest the Foxes publication Andrea Bocelli however, the stats behind their impressive start to this campaign do sign at something particular brewing again in the King Power Stadium.
The 2-0 win at Brighton means Leicester have equalled their very best run of successive victories from the Premier League.
The previous time they bagged five wins was back in 2015-16, the year that finished with them as you understand.
With a mightily impressive aggregate of 17-1 – which included four 1-0 wins and a 2-0 success – this current set of successes have come unlike that run.
Yes, nine of those goals came from one match in Southampton, but falling just one short of double figures in a Premier League game is barely to be sniffed at. It has just been done.
They’ve still got some time to do if they are to challenge the club record for consecutive wins, that was set between 1 and 21 December February in their 2013-14 Championship season.
we actually will be in title-talk territory if they get anywhere near the Premier League record of 18 wins, then place in 2017-18 from Manchester City, or even the new run by Liverpool, which was finished at Old Trafford in October.
However, with home games coming up against fighting Everton and Watford subsequently a visit to Villa that’s followed by Norwich’s trip to the King Power, they look to have a nice likelihood of stretching their form that is nice.
Whoever has followed Rodgers’ profession won’t be surprised by Leicester improvement since his birth. That is the director whose blueprint motivated Liverpool from the 2013-14 Premier League season to 101 targets.
They’ve more emphasis on keeping possession than under predecessor Claude Puel and so are still adept at the rapid switches of play to a rapid forward line that served Ranieri so nicely for a year, but also now have the additional wisdom and guile of James Maddison and Youri Tielemans.
Because of this, Rodgers’ second-placed side have had the fourth-highest number of shots at the branch (147) and generated the fourth-highest number of possibilities (139).
However, for efficiency they are high in the class.
Such ruthlessness facing target is evidenced by Jamie Vardy.
Not only contains Vardy scored Premier League targets than anyone else this year, he has done than some of his main strike competitions.
It took a few moves, because of VAR seeing some encroaching from the penalty area, however, the 32-year-old scored his side’s second goal from the place – significance he has netted in every game of this Foxes’ current streak.
Many high excellent strikers the decades scored their goals in bursts, however, Vardy’s form inevitably evokes memories of the Foxes’ title-winning year, even when he uttered in 11 straight games to sabotage former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy and set a fresh Premier League album.
His attempts that time left him just one short of this English top-flight record for scoring in consecutive matches – 12, set by Jimmy Dunne of Sheffield United in 1931-32.
Leicester have surrendered a league-low eight Premier League goals this season, in Brighton their fourth clean sheet as part of a league-high six complete, with Saturday’s match.
That is no fluke. Their defensive attempts have resulted in fewer shots faced (125 – that the fifth best in the division) than Liverpool (134) and a better anticipated goals contrary to Manchester City.
It is a record few would perhaps have predicted after they sold major centre-back Harry Maguire into Manchester United.
Have a bow Jonny Evans then and Caglar Soyuncu.
The latter deserves special praise. He began only four league matches in 2018-19, yet this year has stepped up to fill the place vacated by Maguire.
Do not underestimate the role played within their own document that is fine from the man who patrols the region Wilfred Ndidi, before them.
The Nigeria participant has generated more tackles (62) and interceptions (37) than every other midfielder from the division this season.
“We’re happy, we are not shying away from anything, but I simply believe there are just 13 games ”
This has been what Rodgers explained when asked on his side’s name credentials .
“What’s really pleasing is that the consequences,” he added. “We arrived and they were at 12th and we needed to improve and build on the great job which Claude [Puel] had done.
“What is amazing now is that our supporters are singing:’We’re definitely going to win the jackpot!’ In the very competitive league in the world, so that tells you where they’re at, the confidence they have along with the fantasies that they have, which is completely amazing.”
For every one of the expectation-managing happening here, with a third of the season nearly gone, Rodgers’ facet are in the title race. What is also inevitable are the similarities using 2015-16, with Rodgers the force – the Ranieri to the Nigel Pearson of Puel.
Rodgers’ facet are a point better than Ranieri’s were at exactly precisely the same point in 2015-16.
Two notable factors are working against the Foxes this time around – unlike then , they will surely not be underestimated and, their rivals are more powerful than in 2015-16.
As a little addition, Leicester’s triumph at Brighton was among six away victories in the top flight on Saturday.
This is the second highest on a single day in Premier League history, behind just the eight to New Year’s Day in 1994 – a figure helped by the fact.
