Rory McIlroy pledged to get back on track during the weekend at the DP World Tour Championship after his hopes of a win of this year took a bang after a frustrating minute round.
McIlroy was just one off the lead following his 64 on Thursday, however he wanted 10 more shots to negotiate with the Earth Course as he slipped six shots behind leader Mike Lorenzo-Vera.
The world No 2 seemed out of sorts early and, after five launching pars, he found water from the tee at the short sixth and ran up a double-bogey before getting back one in the seventh, only to drop additional shots in the 10th and 13th, where he fluffed a chip and did well to limit the damage to some four.
McIlroy almost pitched in for eagle at the 14th and settled for a tap-in birdie, however following another great save at 17he shove his drive at the last also much right and discovered water, even though he managed to discover the green using a fairway-wood along with two-putt to salvage a par-five to remain at six below.
“Clearly I simply didn’t quite have it today,” said McIlroy, who’s playing his closing event of this year before taking a two-month break through winter. “The end was up just a little bit, there was lots of into-off-the-right storms, and I was trying to carry them up and that I was shedding them left a little bit. Attempt to figure out that and I need to do a little job on the range.
“But I hung in there now. Now went on the edges of these holes, and that I didn’t understand the rough was as bad as it had been. It turned out a bit more difficult, but I hit it from the today although I hit it in the fairway the majority of the week.
“I just wasn’t quite there. The end was catchy and the class played with a little more challenging, but clearly I did play as well as yesterday. It is a very inconsistent game. I’ve always said that one day it can seem simple and somebody up there says’not so fast’, and brings you back down to earth. That is golf!
“However, I fought through it and I am still in with a shout to have a go at winning that championship. I just have to stick the head over the weekend and get out there and attempt to take a couple of good scores.”
