Skelton out to dethrone Nicholls with Bennys King
Dan Skelton Expects to deny his former boss Paul Nicholls a 10th win in Newbury’s William Hill Supporting Greatwood Gold Cup Handicap Chase If he Conducts Bennys King.
Even the nine-year-old landed a wonderful pot during the Ladbrokes Trophy assembly in the Berkshire track but will reunite 15lb higher after another run at Ascot last time out.
Nicholls has dominated the race – and he has Mont Des Avaloirs among the 24-strong entrance, Secret Investor and a year’s winner San Benedeto this moment.
Skelton said:”Bennys King certainly runs there.
“He won in the Ladbrokes Winter Festival – he then ran well at Ascot. I believe this trail is perfect, and also a little bit of soft ground over the excursion won’t be a issue.
“He is quite full of the weights, but I would need to give him an opportunity because we’ve trained him specifically for it.”
Skelton was Nicholls’ helper for nine years, so that he knows what is required to acquire the race.
“Paul used to win the race every year – and if he did not win it he’d win it the year after,” he said.
“The Greatwood Gold Cup is a good race for horses that are not likely to Cheltenham, and we really were going to Cheltenham with all Bennys King.
“It fits in well – it is graded and can be well worth a few quid, therefore we will crack on and give it a try .”
